10 Things I Love About Winnipeg

10 Things I Love About Winnipeg

Thinking of moving to Winnipeg? Here’s what makes this city a fantastic place to call home.

When you picture Winnipeg, you might think of chilly winters (and mosquitoes!) —but those of us who live here know that this city has far more to offer than its reputation suggests. As a Realtor and lifelong Winnipegger, I’ve come to truly appreciate the many things that make this city such a wonderful (and underrated) place to live.

If you're considering moving to Winnipeg, here are 10 things I genuinely love about living here—and why you might want to make it your next home.

1. Affordable Living That Makes Sense

One of Winnipeg’s biggest advantages is its affordability. The average house price in Winnipeg is around $425,000, making it one of the most budget-friendly major cities in Canada. Whether you're buying your first home or upgrading, Winnipeg offers space and value that’s hard to beat.

Unlike many other urban centres, homeownership here is still a realistic goal for many families, young professionals, and retirees. Even within city limits, you can find three-bedroom homes on generous lots, condos near the downtown core, or charming character homes in established neighbourhoods.

The cost of living in Winnipeg is also refreshingly low. Groceries, utilities, insurance, and everyday expenses are manageable, allowing you to live comfortably, save, and still have enough left over to enjoy life. Property taxes are reasonable, and there’s no provincial sales tax on many essentials, which helps stretch your budget further.

2. A Diverse and Stable Economy

Winnipeg isn’t a one-industry town. The local economy is balanced across aerospace, health care, manufacturing, agriculture, technology, and finance. Major employers like Manitoba Hydro, Canada Life, and Boeing help keep the city economically strong and diverse.

We’re also home to several post-secondary institutions including the University of Manitoba, University of Winnipeg, and Red River College Polytechnic. These contribute not only to education and innovation but also to employment and economic growth.

This economic stability offers opportunities whether you’re an entrepreneur, tradesperson, healthcare worker, educator, or office professional. In fact, Winnipeg has consistently shown resilience during national economic downturns, which speaks to the strength and diversity of our job market.  This also translates to a more stable housing market, one that avoids the sharp increases and drops of cities like Calgary.

3. A Flourishing Arts and Culture Scene

Winnipeg's creative spirit is alive and well. From the Royal Winnipeg Ballet to quirky art galleries in the Exchange District, there's always something inspiring to see or do. The Winnipeg Art Gallery, which houses the largest public collection of contemporary Inuit art in the world, is a must-visit for art lovers.

Festivals like Folklorama, the Winnipeg Fringe Festival, and Jazz Winnipeg reflect the city’s deep cultural roots and love for artistic expression. Live music is everywhere, from small pubs and lounges to full-scale arena concerts.

We also have a vibrant theatre community, including Prairie Theatre Exchange and Rainbow Stage, Canada’s longest-running outdoor theatre. If you enjoy live performance, film, or visual art, Winnipeg offers world-class talent and a passionate audience to go with it.

4. Nature at Your Doorstep

Love the outdoors? You're in good company. Winnipeg is filled with parks, green spaces, and riverside trails, perfect for walking, running, cycling, and skiing. Assiniboine Park is a local favourite with its zoo, gardens, and events, while places like Kildonan Park and The Forks offer year-round recreation.

Beyond city limits, you’re just a short drive from the pristine lakes, forests, and hiking trails of Birds Hill, Grand Beach, and the Whiteshell. World-class fishing can be found at Lake of the Woods, and there are great opportunities for hiking and rock climbing throughout the province.

5. Low Commute Times = More Time for You

With an average commute time of 20 to 25 minutes, Winnipeg offers the kind of work-life balance that people in larger cities envy. Whether you drive, bike, or take transit, getting around is generally easy and efficient.

Traffic congestion is minimal by national standards. Even during peak hours, you’re unlikely to face the long, stressful commutes common in larger urban centres. This saves you time, reduces stress, and gives you more freedom to enjoy everything else Winnipeg has to offer.

6. A Food Scene That Celebrates Local Flavour

Winnipeg’s restaurant culture is a hidden gem. With an abundance of independent and small restaurants, there’s no shortage of culinary creativity. You’ll find everything from pierogies and bannock to ramen, tapas, and gourmet vegan burgers.

From historic institutions like The Forks Market to trendy neighbourhoods like Corydon and Osborne Village, there’s something for every taste and every budget. Local chefs take pride in showcasing prairie ingredients, and the city’s multicultural population ensures a rich blend of global flavours.

We’re also known for our coffee culture and bakeries—perfect for cozy meetups or solo downtime. If you’re a foodie, Winnipeg will keep you curious and well-fed.

7. A Welcoming and Diverse Population

Winnipeg is one of the most multicultural cities in Canada. Over 100 languages are spoken here, and more than 25% of the population identifies as a visible minority. Indigenous culture also plays a central and celebrated role in the city’s identity.

This diversity of population is one of Winnipeg’s greatest strengths. It shows up in our festivals, schools, community centres, and food scene. It brings people together and makes this city a vibrant, inclusive place to live.

Whether you’re new to Canada or moving from another province, you’ll find a strong sense of community and connection.

8. Four Distinct Seasons—and People Who Embrace Them

We really do get all four seasons here—and we lean into them. Spring is full of renewal, with melting snow, blooming trees, and patio reopenings. Summer is long, sunny, and packed with festivals, lake days, and late sunsets. Fall brings crisp air, bright foliage, and harvest markets. And yes, winter is cold—but it’s also magical.

Instead of hibernating, Winnipeggers head out skating on the river, snowshoeing in the parks, or walking through illuminated displays at The Forks. Events like Festival du Voyageur, Warm Up Winnipeg, and Ice Castles give winter a reason to celebrate.

Winnipeg isn’t just a city with seasons—it’s a city that truly enjoys them.

9. World-Class Mosquito Control

Prairie summers are warm and sunny—but they can also attract mosquitoes. Fortunately, Winnipeg runs one of the most sophisticated mosquito control programs in North America.  Winnipeg’s reputation as the “mosquito capital of North America” is, fortunately, long over.

The city uses science-backed larviciding, regular monitoring of trap counts, and public education to manage mosquito populations effectively. When necessary, fogging is done in targeted areas, keeping the buzz (and the bites) to a minimum.

As someone who suffers greatly when bitten, I can assure you that I’ve been enjoying backyard barbecues, evening walks and camping trips for years now without any noticeable bites!

10. Big Blue Prairie Skies

One of Winnipeg’s most underrated features? Our skies. With over 300 sunny days per year, Winnipeg is one of the sunniest cities in Canada. The wide-open prairie views, vibrant sunsets, and bright blue skies can boost your mood and make even the coldest winter day feel just a bit warmer.

Whether you’re watching a sunrise on an early morning drive or relaxing under a golden prairie sunset, the sky here is always putting on a show. It’s a daily reminder of the natural beauty all around us.
